How we recycle…YOUR HAIR!
Do we need to worry about putting hair in landfill? Well did you know that even lettuce won’t decompose properly in landfill, so hair is no different!
Green Salon Collective (GSC) are on a mission to reduce salon waste and one way they do this is by reusing hair in the following ways:
🌊 Waterway cleanups: Hair can be used to absorb oil and pollutants from rivers and seas.
💇♀️ Hair mats: Felted hair can be used to cover drains and prevent pollutants passing through.
🧴 Regenerative biomanufacturing: GSC is working Biohm, a London based regenerative biomanufacturer, your hair is being combines with their unique binding material ‘orb’, to create particleboard-like sheets as well as moulded 3D objects. They are also working with mycelium, the root structure of fungi, to grow around hair to create insulation panels.
🐑 Wool alternatives: GSC is partnering with The Natural Fibre Co to make wool containing 40% hair.
🪢 Hair rope: GSC run workshops with their research partner, Sanne Visser, Design Researcher in Residence at The Design Museum, that invite people to explore hair rope making while inspiring them to rethink the concept of waste.
🏢 Architecture: Hair could be used in building materials, and GSC is collaborating with architects to figure out how.
👩🦳 Wigs: Hair can be reused to make wigs.
🎨 Art: Artists like Jenni Dutton are creating things like dresses out of human hair!
🪱 Composting & Gardening: Hair is nitrogen-rich and ideal to be used in the garden and for composting.
🪴 Potting felt: Using hair in plants to boost growth. A Green Salon Collective study revealed plants with hair at the bottom and top of the soil grew 87% bigger!
And when there are such amazing properties of hair that can support all these eco initiatives why put it in landfill?
We are so thankful to the recycling initiative with that makes this all possible. We charge a Green Fee (£1 per service, ie cut & colour = £2) to do this, and you can rest assured your salon experience is as green as it can be!
